Everest Base Camp 16 days

Everest Base Camp trek is special package trek of Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition. We include fact of the trip, major attraction, package itinerary, maps, temperature info, permits and necessary equipment checklist for a family, Individual and group Joining basic.

The highest mountain on earth, Everest 8848.86 meter (29,031.7 ft) has several names to different people. It is called Mt.Everest to the Westerners and Chhomolungma to the Sherpa and Qumolangma to the Tibetans. The Solukhumbu (Solu) Region of Nepal where lies the Mt.Everest 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7ft) has been a magnet for travelers ever since its opening to foreigners in 1950. This region is famous not only for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain but also for its Sherpa villages and monasteries with their virtually unchanged unique culture. Solu has received countless trekkers and mountaineers from all over the world. Solukhumbu has developed to a stage where many options are possible from a full-scale expedition with tents and porters to an independent trek using the local lodges. Sagarmatha/Everest National Park, established in 1976, covers much of this region. This fascinating land surrounded by high mountains is a real paradise for mountaineers & trekkers.

One can fly to Lukla from Kathmandu or get a bus to Jiri to get there. Trek from Jiri to Lukla is a classic trek and the best way to acclimatize as well. But it takes long time!
Gokyo and the Everest Base Camp are the two trekking routes where many people like to go.

Trip Profile

Health and Experience Requirements

Virgin Nepal Trek and Expeditions Everest Base Camp Trek is a moderate trek suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 4-7 hours a day with a light rucksack. In some days we might even need to walk 8 to 9 hours. Walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in the lower altitudes; however, if we are in excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude, self confidence and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. It is vital that we consult with our doctor before we decide and set up for the Everest Base camp trek. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition before booking the trek.

A Typical Day On the trail...at dawn, Sherpa wakes us up and offers a cup of warm tea with a smile. After freshening and finishing up our tea, we will have hearty breakfast before setting off. At the right moment, we pack our bags and assemble in the dining hall before setting off on the day's trek.

After approximately 2-3 hours of trekking we take a break for lunch somewhere on the trail. After a relaxing lunch, we typically spend around 2-3 hours or even more sometimes on the trail before reaching our stopping point.

Throughout the day, we will take frequent rest breaks and take time to admire the fascinating mountain views. We further take plenty of pictures of ourselves with incredibly panoramic mountains, rivers, landscapes, prayer flags, temples, shrines, cairns, and monasteries. Once we arrive at our tea house, we take a brief rest, shower, and have a light snack with tea or coffee. If we are so inclined, we may take a short walk through the village and surrounding neighborhoods.

After checking into our room we have time to read or chat with fellow trekkers or with Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition's crew members. Following a warm dinner in a cozy dining hall our trek leader briefs us on the next day's itinerary.

We give breakfast order which allows our guide to have everything ready for us for the next morning. Extra time can be spent on reading, enjoying some drinks or playing cards.

Finally, it is off to bed for a well earned night's rest before starting all over again the next day.

Travel Insurance

It is a condition upon joining any of Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition trips that all clients be insured for comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and treatment costs). Please note that we don't arrange or sell insurance.

Acclimatization

Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition 'Everest Base Camp Trek' itinerary is planned with a high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

Going up at higher altitudes too fast causes a medical condition serious enough to result in death. The higher the altitude, the less oxygen will be in the air. For example, at an altitude above of 5000m, there is 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Therefore, our body needs many days to adapt to an environment with less oxygen. Our itineraries generally allow sufficient time to acclimatize. So, for a safe trek, it is absolutely essential to allow sufficient time for acclimatization. Sensible planning is therefore required to minimize the risk of AMS.

Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition (we) advises guest(s) with known heart, lungs or blood diseases to consult their doctor before traveling. Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorders are symptoms of AMS.

Leader(s) and Staff Arrangements

The most significant thing that makes our Everest Base Camp Trek successful, enjoyable and memorable is the skilled, experienced, courteous and helpful trek leader and the crew members with ability of operating our days in the mountain smoothly. Our trek will be led by the best and most professional leaders. All of Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition's trekking leaders are carefully selected on the basis of their appropriate experience, leadership skills and personal aptitude. With an objective of sustaining local communities, Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition only employs local staff who have adequate knowledge about culture, ecosystem, flora, fauna, geography, and history of their local region. The trek and expedition leaders have undergone the following training:

>Intensive Wilderness First Aid

>Trekking Guide Training

>Eco Trekking Workshop and Adventure Meet

>English Language

>Conservation and Biodiversity

>Rock climbing, Ice Climbing and Mountaineering (for expedition leaders)

Porter Care

(We) Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition is firmly committed to porter rights. We make sure that all our porters are well treated and well paid.

Further, Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition provides the level of shelter, clothing and footwear that these harsh environments demand. Porters who become sick are treated with the same care and attention as other team members. We have previously used helicopters at company's expense to rescue porters from dangerous situations. And for the porter's sake, all trekkers keep their luggage bag weight under 15 kg/33 pounds.

We support the work of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), making our

resources available to them to help improve the working conditions of the porters.

Environmental Concerns

The Everest region is stunningly beautiful, but equally fragile. Future generations have just as much of a right to appreciate it as we do. Hence, the tourism industry has an obligation to protect and preserve it. Virgin Nepal Trek & Expedition employs a 'zero impact' policy on the natural environment and the traditional communities that live at the traveled places. We enforce a number of do's and do not.

Please note*

That often the Kathmandu-Manthali-Lukla-Kathmandu flight gets delayed by

a few hours or may even be canceled for one, two, or more days due to unfavorable weather conditions. Such conditions may arise even in the best seasons. Hence, in such cases, you must be prepared for long waits either at Kathmandu or Lukla airports, as this can happen either at the start or end of the trek or even both! We will do our best to avoid such delays, and arrange the next flight for you. We also organize Helicopter rescue in such conditions, if it is available and upon request by our clients.

In a helicopter it can lift 4-5 persons per flight. Still, we suggest you to be prepared for possible delays/cancellations, and if possible to come with some extra buffer days (1-2 days) at the end of the trip to accommodate such delays. If everything runs smoothly and you still have a few days of your buffer days left then you may even engage yourself in optional activities which can be arranged by Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition upon request. The optional activities may include visiting places/landmarks of your choice, adventure sports, shopping, etc.

In case the flight delay/cancellation happens at the start of trip and it goes so long that it disturbs your onward travel schedule, you are free to choose an alternative trip such as a trek in the Annapurna, Langtang, or any other region. If you are not interested in the alternative trip and would rather wait for your original preferred trip, you are welcome to wait in Kathmandu for as many days as it takes to get a flight to Lukla.

However, please note that there will be no refund, if you lose time waiting at the airport and do not take an alternative tour or you only do a short trek later due to time limitation. If the cancellation happens before the trip, we will provide you accommodation and lunch in a guesthouse in Kathmandu. In case of the flight delay/cancellation after finishing of the trek, you will be responsible for all your expenses. Please also note that you will not be entitled to any refund for the services (such as hotel, transport, flight, etc.) included in the package that you would not use later.

Day to Day Itinerary

Kathmandu drive to Manthali fly Lukla - Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft): 3- 4 hours trek

(Trekking times only) After breakfast, we will be escorted to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft), a gateway destination from where our trek begins. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above the breathtaking green and white mountains, we reach the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world culminating in a dramatic landing on a hillside surrounded by high mountain peaks. Upon arrival at Lukla, we meet our other crew members and after some packing and arrangements, we start our trek through the prosperous village of Lukla until we reach Phakding. To assist in acclimatization, we only have a short hike today. However, if interested in additional activities we can take a side trip to a nearby monastery.

 Overnight at Phakding. Included meals:

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (B,L,D)

Day03 Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,280 ft): 5 - 6 hrs

Walking through a beautiful pine forest, the track leads us along the Dudh Koshi River through many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. First, we catch wonderful prospect of the glistening Mt.Thamserku (6618 m). Through the settlement of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, we come to the check post and entrance to Everest National Park. We pass through the last village of Jorsale before reaching Namche Bazaar. The trail climbs through the forests and bridges until we reach the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. After a final steep ascent for about two hours we will get our first sight of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. Upon this juncture, we stop at Chautara to admire the view. We still need to hike about 1.5 hours to reach Namche Bazaar, a gateway to Mt. Everest and main trading center of this region. We stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.(B,L,D)

Day 04 Namche Bazaar: Rest a day

This is the first of the two days set aside for "acclimatization". Health experts recommend us to stay active and moving during the rest day too instead of being idle.We either spend the day taking a day's hike to Thame or visiting Khumjung or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar itself. Namche Bazaar is the main center of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday.

If we trek a few hundred vertical feet during the day, it will help us to properly acclimatize. Our guides take us to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can observe an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture and learn about the various plant and animal life of the Everest region. (B,L,D)

Day 05 Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft): 5 - 6 hrs
Upon breakfast in Namche, we set out towards Tengboche, enjoying superb view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam and close up view of Thamserku. Our trek follows more or less smooth trail with few ups and downs which will not bother us as the magnificent view of the Himalayas keeps our company all through the journey. Along the way, we can spot wildlife musk deer, a herd of Himalayan Tahr and multicolored pheasants. The trail goes gradually descend to Kayangjuma. The path eventually reaches Sansa, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. The track then follows through the pine forests and after we cross the prayer flags festooned bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, we reach Phunki Thenga, a small settlement with a couple of teahouses and a small army post amidst the alpine woods. After having a relaxed lunch at Phunki Tenga, we gear up for a slightly tougher climb through the pine forests before we reach Tengboche.

Tengboche is a great place for close up views of Mt Ama Dablam, Mt Nuptse, and Mt Everest, and it has the biggest Buddhist Monastery of the Khumbu region. We pay our visit to the monastery the same day at around 3 pm to witness the ceremony in the principal and a popular monastery in the Everest Region.

 Overnight stay at Tengboche. (B,L,D)

Day 06 Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m/14,300ft):5 - 6 hrs

With mountains at its backdrop, the monastery at Tengboche looks more spectacular in the morning. At this juncture, we can take pictures of the monastery and the scenery around and as usual start the day journey.

We choose the upper trail for better views on the way to Pangboche village. We pass through several Chortens and Mani walls and small villages. The place where we stop for lunch not only serves

delicious food but also allows a fantastic close-up view of Mt Ama Dablam. In the afternoon, we walk north to Pheriche or take the eastward trail beneath the towering north face of Mt Ama Dablam. From here onwards, the walk is fairly moderate as we enter the Imja Valley. The valley gradually unfolds as we approach the confluence of the Lobuche River. We descend into the river and begin the last and steepest climb of the day up to Dingboche. On arrival at Dingboche, we will see beautiful array of fields enclosed by stone walls to protect barley, buckwheat and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals. Overnight at Dingboche.

(B,L,D)

Day 07 Dingboche - Lobuche (4,940 m/16,210 ft): 3 - 4 hrs

We start the day with a climb to Duglha through the Khumbu Khola valley.

The walk along the arid terrace is rewarding with awesome views ofmountains on all sides. As we come to a yak herder's place called Dusa, the valley begins to narrow and we continue through Phulung Karpo, the campsite of the first successful Everest Expedition in 1953.

Above Phulung Karpo is Chola Lake. As we move on, the majestic view of Mt. Pumori (7138 m/ 23418 ft) comes into view. As the trail descends and curves, Mt. Pumori disappears from view and we come across a roaring stream. After crossing a small wooden bridge, we ascend to Duglha. We can see the tip of Mt Nuptse from here as well as Mt Cholatse, Mt Thamserku, and several other magnificent peaks. Overnight at Lobuche . (B,L,D)

Day10 Lobuche – Gorak Shep (5,170 m/16,961ft) – Everest Base Camp

(5,364m/17,594ft) – Gorak Shep: 8 – 9 hrs

The trail to Gorak Shep goes ahead through the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We pass through the pyramid sign post. Ahead on the trail we see crest of the north ridge of Everest along with Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur,Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Nuptse, etc. A small ascent would take us to Thangma Riju from where we perceive 360 degree vista of snowy mountains. Climbing steeply up to the top through the torrent of Changri Glacier, we catch our first glimpse of Kalapathar, a gray-green knoll beneath the Mt. Pumori. As we reach Gorak Shep, we will find snow-capped mountains looming all around us including the top of the world - Mt. Everest. After a brief lunch and rest, we take the trail to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorak Shep Lake. Continuing straight ahead, we come through the Indian army mountaineers' memorials. Only upon reaching the Everest Base Camp do we really appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the hazardous route through the Khumbu icefall.

Mountaineer's tents stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the Spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. Everest actually is not visible from here. By now we have met the ultimate objective of our trip. However, the sunset view from Kalapathar is more admirable than the sunrise view, so it is suggested to visit Kalapathar today during sunset. As the setting sun's rays strike the snow capped mountains the resulting the scenery is indescribable. For those trekkers who wish to continue to Kalapathar, our guides and Sherpas coordinate in hiking to Kalapathar for amazing sunset view today rather than waiting until the next day.
Overnight at Gorak Shep at a local lodge.

Day11 Gorak Shep - Kalapathar (5545m/18,192ft)- Pheriche (4280 m/14,070 ft):

8 - 9 hrs.

Today is the climax of our trip. We start early in the morning to catch the dramatic views from Kalapathar and witness the first light of day caress the peaks of the mountains, particularly, Mt. Everest. However, we need to be prepared for an early morning departure, amid predawn darkness and cold temperature (-10 to -14 C). Further, there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse tower to the east even as Everest begins to reveal itself. During the ascent to Kalapathar, we can pause to catch breath at several outstanding view points from where we can snap great pictures. After several hours of ascent, we will reach Kalapathar. From Kalapathar, we scramble up to the top of a rocky outcrop marked by cairns and prayer flags.Mind-blowing Himalayan panorama unfolds before our eyes as they wander from one mighty massif to another. We can take as many pictures as we want with our camera but don't forget to imprint the vista into our mind's eye so that it lasts a lifetime. On being back to Gorak Shep, we have breakfast and wait other participants to return. Those participants who wish to visit Everest Base Camp today will have early breakfast as the hike to base camp takes longer (4-5 hrs) than the Kalapathar hike. Upon return to GorakShep, the group will have lunch together. We descend in the afternoon and arrive at Pheriche in time for a good night's rest.

(B,L,D)

Day12Pheriche to Kyangjuma (3,570m/11,710ft): 5 - 6 hrs

Just after at the start of our trek, we will cross Khumbu Khola (stream).Following the main Everest trail down the beautiful scenic valley, we pass through the villages of Tsuro Wog, Orsho, Shomare and reach Pangboche at the base of Ama Dablam. We cross the bridge over Imja Khola and pass through the Deboche village and reach Tengboche. We spend a brief time at Tengboche monastery, observe its many prayer wheels. We cannot explore prayer altars inside as the monastery opens only at 3 pm. From Tengboche, a steep descent of about 1500 ft/500m leads through rhododendron bushes and fir trees to the Dudh Koshi River. We will cross the first bridge over Dudh Koshi on our return trip to Phunki Tenga. Further, we pass the village of Tashinga and Sansa before finally reaching beautiful village of Kyangjuma. Upon arrival at this juncture, we appreciate the gorgeous Ama-dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest!

Overnight at Kyangjuma. (B, L,D)

Day13Kyangjuma to Monjo [2,840m/9,315ft]: 4 - 5 hrs

The trail to Namche Bazar clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. We lookout for wildlife such as mountain goats, snow leopards, and colorful pheasants while passing through the forest by the trail. We have enough time in Namche to shop and relax in a bakery that serves coffee and cakes, and provides Internet access. A steep descent from Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the Dudh Kosi river near the confluence of the Dhudh Koshi and the Bhote Koshi Rivers.

We will cross the Dudh Koshi River twice at separate locations before reaching Monjo. We will leave Sagarmatha National Park after exiting from its official entrance near Monjo and finally reach Monjo Village. Not only is Monjo a quieter place to stay than Namche, it also means our porters have a less strenuous walk back to Lukla

tomorrow.Overnight at Monjo. (B,L,D)

Day14 Trek to Lukla 5-6 hrs trek Altitude: 2865m

Today, we have the last day of the trek. The air is warmer as we walk on the same trail to reach Lukla. Our trek in the mountain ends after we reach Lukla. We spend our time reminiscing about

our time spent in the mountains. Overnight at Lukla.(B,L,D)

Day 15 Lukla - Kathmandu and free activity

Lukla - Kathmandu Today, we fly back to Kathmandu after our long mountain journey. The early morning flight drops us in Kathmandu. We can rest and relax throughout the day at the hotel. If we get interested to take some gifts home from Nepal for friends and relatives, we can visit to some nearby shops or venture out in Thamel for typical Nepalese goods. This short excursion either can be assisted by Virgin Nepal Trek and Expeditions guides or we can do it ourselves too. If we want to explore any other areas in Kathmandu, we have to manage time for this today as well! At the evening we will be at a fantastic celebration dinner together for successfully completing our trek to Everest Base Camp hosted by Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition! Overnight in Kathmandu at hotel

(B, D)

Day16Depart Kathmandu Altitude: 1300m

Farewell Friend The journey within the mountains of Nepal comes to an end today! There is nothing to do but we just trade emails to travel companions and organize our photos. If we have more time we can do some shopping or sightseeing. At last approximately 3hours before our scheduled flight, one staff from Virgin Nepal Trek and Expedition escorts us to the airport. On our way to home we will have plenty of time to plan our next adventure trip in the wonderful country of Nepal.
